Engaging South Asian American voters
TheySeeBlue, 2020
Role: Web designer
Responsibilities: Create a web experience to engage potential members and showcase the impact of South Asian American engagement in American politics
Team: Two co-designers, co-founder of TheySeeBlue
The challenge:
TheySeeBlue is a national organization that is rapidly growing with across the country. Started in 2018 by a group of ‘Desis’ in the Bay Area, the leadership is now determined to mobilize South Asian American to vote progressive in the 2020 elections. With each state having its own model for success, my two fellow designers and I were tasked to create a web experience that would showcase the quality of each chapters’ work and invite new members to join. The site was built on Wix and required significant content and copy clean-up.
Adding new elements to improve the web experience:
In order to accomplish ours goals to engage more members and showcase our accomplishments, we needed to re-examine the information architecture and navigation design of the site. We asked ourselves questions like, “what is the journey of someone looking to join a chapter?” and “how do we organize the existing elements from screen to screen?”
Next, we turned our attention to the user interface. Using Wix’s functionality, we created new buttons, maps, and inputs to ultimately drive the user from one step to the next.
Finally, we improved the copywriting across the site in order to reduce the amount of text and make the language user-friendly.
Our process:
We worked through the website improvements in weekly sprints. We held weekly planning meetings in which we reviewed the previous week’s work, offered critiques, and strategized on the next priority sprint items. This agile approach allowed for quick results in order to get the site up-and-running in a fast manner.
